Deep in the mist-shrouded forests of southwestern Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park shelters approximately half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas — a species numbering just over 1,000 individuals. Trekking through dense ancient forest to spend a permitted hour with a habituated gorilla family is widely regarded as one of the most profound, moving wildlife encounters in the world.

The trek itself — through bamboo, giant ferns, and tangled undergrowth — is an adventure. The moment of encounter, watching these enormous, intelligent beings go about their daily lives, is one that stays with visitors forever.
