What Makes Kenya a Good Safari Choice?
Kenya offers excellent value and easy logistics: a well-developed network of parks and conservancies within relatively short flights of Nairobi, headlined by the Masai Mara — arguably Africa's single best big-cat destination — and the elephant herds of Amboseli, framed by Mount Kilimanjaro. Kenya suits shorter trips (a week or less) without compromising on wildlife quality.
What Makes Tanzania a Good Safari Choice?
Tanzania is the larger canvas. The Serengeti's plains are vast enough to host the full drama of the Great Migration for most of the year, the Ngorongoro Crater packs an extraordinary density of wildlife into a single self-contained caldera, and Zanzibar offers a genuine beach escape at the end of a safari. Tanzania rewards longer trips — 10 days or more — and pairs naturally with a coastal finish.
Where Is the Great Migration at Different Times of Year?
This is the question we're asked most. The Great Migration is a year-round circuit through both countries, not a single event:
- December–March: Southern Serengeti and Ndutu, Tanzania (calving season)
- April–June: Central and Western Serengeti, Tanzania
- July–October: Masai Mara, Kenya (river crossings)
- November: Transitioning back south into Tanzania
If seeing the migration is your priority, your destination should follow the calendar above rather than a fixed preference for one country.
Should I Choose Kenya or Tanzania for My Safari?
Choose Kenya if you have a week or less, want the Masai Mara specifically, or are combining safari with the Kenyan coast. Choose Tanzania if you have 10+ days, want the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar in one trip, or your travel dates fall outside the July–October Mara season.
