Rwanda has invested heavily in high-end lodges near the park and is known for clean, well-run infrastructure throughout the country. Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda are more expensive than Uganda's.
Why Choose Uganda for Gorilla Trekking?
Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest requires a longer transfer — typically a full day's drive from Entebbe, or a short scenic flight — but rewards travellers with more than gorillas alone. Kibale Forest offers some of Africa's best chimpanzee tracking, Murchison Falls adds a classic game-drive-and-boat-cruise safari, and permit costs are meaningfully lower than Rwanda's.
What Is the Gorilla Trekking Experience Actually Like?
Both countries offer genuinely similar core experiences: a briefing at park headquarters, a trek through dense forest that can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on where the gorilla family is that day, and a strictly limited one hour in the gorillas' presence once found.
