Set among the dramatic peaks of the Virunga volcanic chain on Rwanda's northern border, Volcanoes National Park is the most accessible destination in the world for mountain gorilla trekking. Twelve habituated gorilla families are available for trekking, with a maximum of eight visitors per group per day ensuring an intimate, uncrowded experience.
Golden monkey tracking offers an additional primate adventure, while the park's forests and volcanic slopes also support forest buffalo, black-fronted duiker, and rare bird species. The nearby Dian Fossey Karisoke Research Centre carries historical significance as the site where the pioneering gorilla researcher spent her life's work.
